Offering Spiritual Companionship

One of the services I’m offering in retirement is “spiritual companionship.” I could have offered Spiritual Direction but I’m adapting the design of Spiritual Direction enough that I thought it would be helpful to use a different name.

The spiritual companionship I am offering is a synthesis of Unitarian Universalist values and Buddhist mindfulness meditation. These are two value systems that guide and inform my life and ministry.

I’m also very interested in a non-directive approach to the relationship. This is implicit in how I was trained at the Meadville Unitarian Universalist seminary to do spiritual direction. It is important to honor the difference in approach in the name itself. Believing they are going to be told how to be spiritual is quite likely to interfere with Unitarian Universalist’s willingness to do this kind of spiritual development.

There are two ways I’ll be offering this form of spiritual development: for individuals and for groups. I experimented with offering both during my training and found both deeply rewarding and helpful to the participants.
